Album Review: Warlung – The Poison Touch (Heavy Psych Sounds)

Premium occult heavy rock merchants Warlung are back with their new album, ‘The Poison Touch’. The Texan foursome will release the album on February 14th, 2025, on Heavy Psych Sounds.

Featuring gargantuan riffs, hazy stoner-infused groove, the weight of doom, the energy of rock, and the atmosphere of psychedelia, Warlung’s new album is a trippy listen, but one that fills the heart and soul with warmth. Their approach, while familiar to those who like their rock to have a bit of the flavour of burning incense, is one based in anthems. Warlung, for all their varied ideas, have gone the catchy route.

Evident from the start by the vigorous mind bender that is Digital Smoke. A trippy section and a screaming guitar solo are just some of this banger’s best moments. Then, along comes White Light Seeker to deliver a bevy of groovy riffs and send pleasure spasms throughout the body. The different tempo just makes this one even more delectable. Before Mourning Devils changes the tone with sci-fi effects and ominous ambience. Setting up the extensive and expressive Spell Speaker, a giant of a track.

Not just because it’s nearly nine-minutes long, but because it shimmers with vibrant hues and Warlung push their sound into poppier territories, keeping the anthemic side of themselves front and centre. However, this is them at their most enigmatic and there are many twists and turns before the final notes play out. It’s simply brilliant.

Phew! You might think you need a rest after that, but here’s Holy Guide to bring more groovy riffs and thumping drum beats to help energise the soul. Warlung sound great here, and the smile on the face only spreads wider when a track like Rat Bastard burns so brightly (the solo is class) and The Sleepless Prophet dials up the sinister occult vibes via its heavy focus on melody. Then, just to end things in style, it’s 29th Scroll, 6th Verse, and a robust head banger that puts the emphatic stamp on Warlung’s impressive abilities. No filler, no wasted time, just banger track after banger track, this is a must listen album.
