Album Review: Vanishing Point – Dead Elysium (AFM Records)

More than six years since the release of ‘Distant Is The Sun’, Vanishing Point are once again ready to take on the world with their world-class melodic metal assault on the senses. Their sixth full-length album ‘Dead Elysium’ is set for release on August 28th 2020.

An hour of epic melodic metal, Vanishing Point may have taken their time to get this stage but now they’re here, they’re making sure you know it means something. How? By assaulting the senses with a classy brew of roaring riffs, massive orchestral elements, soaring vocals, deep bass hooks and kick-ass drumming.

This is music that lifts the soul and makes you feel ten feet tall, all while urging you to bang your head as hard as possible. From the lavish title track, to the more stripped back but still immeasurably epic, Count Your Days and progressive high that is To the Wolves, Vanishing Point begin strongly. If the chorus in the latter doesn’t make your heart grow that little more than you might not have one.

If that’s the case, find it, because Dead Elysium just gets better.

The sharp use of violins in Salvus might be the best use of orchestral elements in a metal track this year. A utterly transcendent offering, the emotion drips from the vocals and the chuggy riffing in the background is the icing on the cake. The Fall defiantly swings and punches with plenty of metal force but it’s quickly usurped by the deep cuts of guitar rhythm on Free. Although the heroic solo is truly where this one excels.

Drawing battle lines with Recreate the Impossible, Vanishing Point then spit fire, albeit powerful and larger-than-life fire, with the frantic Shadow World and bombastic The Healing. All before Dead Elysium is wrapped up with The Ocean. Battered and bruised from such a journey but with unfathomable depths, it is a worthy end.

Nearly an hour of music just flying by in a blur of grand and glorious melodic metal.
