Album Review: Thundermother – Dirty & Divine (AFM Records)

Two years on from the release of their last offering Black & Gold, the Swedish rock quartet Thundermother will release their much-awaited, forthcoming studio album, ‘Dirty & Divine’, due out on February 7th, 2025, via AFM Records.

A good rocking time is always guaranteed when Thundermother are about, and their hot streak continues with a riffy, groovy, rocking and anthemic ten-track hit. Kicking off in lovable body shaking and head banging style with So Close. The guitars are immense, but so are the vocals, with this opener getting jammed in the brain already.

Though that is somewhat of a common theme for the entire album with the following Can’t Put Out the Fire and Speaking of the Devil showcasing even more anthemic quality. The former, with its energy and fabulous harmonised group singing, is one of the albums most smile inducing tracks of all. Whereas the latter’s rhythmic drumbeat, and melody-infused guitar edginess sounds larger than life. That’s Thundermother for you.

This isn’t a stretch, musically, for them and if you’re a fan of everything they’ve done before this, you’ll be very comfortable with what is on offer here as a whole. It’s their heavy and hard rock sound perfected, and so enjoyable as Feeling Alright keeps foot tapping and finger snapping likability at the forefront. Before the middle point of the album kicks in with the lively heavy metal ode that is Take the Power. You know how this goes, rip-roaring riffs and high energy vocals. A Thundermother special as we all know and love.

Vibrant through and through, there is no getting sick of this, especially when the latter half of the album kicks so much ass too. With a bit more melody, and plenty of groove, it’s the chorus of I Left My Licence in the Future that sticks. Although some stonking soloing hits nicely too.

Lull points are few and far between, and even when not firing on every cylinder, a track like Dead or Alive is still thoroughly enjoyable. Then along comes the AC/DC-worshipping sexy groove of Can You Feel It and big singalong that is Bright Eyes to make the latter part of the album feel just as important as the former. Especially when it all culminates with a track as strong as American Adrenaline. Thundermother have delivered solid gold rock again.
