Album Review: Slob – Deepwoods Shack Of Sodomy (Comatose Music)

Two-piece UK murder machine Slob were formed back in 2013, but it’s only now that they are finally ready to uncover the rotten corpse of their debut album, Deepwoods Shack of Sodomy. Beneath the damp soil Ross Honour (Guitar) and James Murphy (Guitar/Vocals/Drum Programming) have been concealing a multitude of sins which Comatose Music have finally coaxed them into revealing. The simplicity of Slob’s aggressive death metal sound hides a really nasty underbelly of filth. Here, we have a 7-track album that is the crusted gore dredged up from the bottom of a bog. Exemplified by the intro (Sodomy in the Swamps) that combines the naturalistic sound of a deep swamp and the infamous sodomy scene from Deliverance.

That horror bleeds into Squeal Like a Pig. The crust is broken and a foul, noxious stench is rising. Slob make no apologies for just how commonplace their brand of death metal is. Though that is not to suggest they aren’t extremely good at what they do. This is unfiltered noise and belligerence that is in-your-face and focused from beginning to end.

The title track, Hogtied and Sodomized, Alligator Death Roll, Wrong Turn… each as brutal as the last and stinking of the swamp. Credit to Slob for creating something so immersive and disgusting sounding.

This level of vileness has a shelf-life so smartly, Slob keep it short and tight. That being said though, Pitchfork Puncture Wounds is the last track and is a little over 7 minutes long. Yes, that’s 7+ minutes of guttural repugnance, abhorrent instrumentation and the constant sense of sinking into the filthy mire of Deepwoods Shack of Sodomy. Getting out alive is the real struggle.
