Album Review: Rebel Wizard – Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response (Prosthetic Records)

Kindred to the bastard son of the NWoBHM movement and reared from the deepest, darkest, most sinister swallows of hell; Australia’s Rebel Wizard returns to earth-realm with 10 track fatal dose of fuzzed out, blackened fury on the new album, Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response.

The new album will be released on August 17th 2018 via Prosthetic Records.

Rebel Wizard 2

Fury is an understatement when it comes to describing Rebel Wizard’s epic of an album. We’re talking ten tracks of clobbering heaviness, vicious pace and an touch of the old school metal about it. The guitars thunder with power, the drums smash with vehemence all while the vocals howl like a beast.

It’s a lot to take in as there is no letup but persevere as when Rebel Wizard hit the mark such as on the exceptional ‘Drunk on the wizdom of unicorn semen’ it’s pretty damn spectacular.

As is the tornado of heavy rhythm that is ‘The poor and ridiculous alchemy of Christ and Lucifer and us all’ and the majestic guitar led ‘Mother Nature, oh my sweet mistress, showed me the other worlds and it was just fallacy’.

For all its blackened heaviness, it is actually the NWoBHM style that really makes the difference here. It gives them a edge that is far more exciting and responsive.

Don’t let that fool you though, when they want to be Rebel Wizard are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to heaviness. ‘Healing the chakras with heavy negative wizard metal’ has these injections of brutality that will have even the most ardent of metal fans saying “steady on”.
