Album Review: Massive Wagons – Triggered! (Earache Records)

Rock ‘n’ roll ringleaders Massive Wagons will release their new album ‘Triggered!’, out 28th October 2022 via Earache Records.

Vocalist Barry “Baz” Mills says about the new album:

I think this album is a lot more British sounding. I think we’ve managed to bring our sound more up-to-date, it sounds fresh and exciting. It has much more of a punk vibe about it, but, that being said, it’s still full of everything we love about guitar music.

There are some very angry, passionate songs in there. We all dug really deep writing this one, some of them were a real labour of love. I think we truly have made our best album yet. I know that’s a cliché, but our other albums felt like they had a foot in the previous one somehow, be it leftover songs, a certain sound or style… But I think this one stands alone as a unique sounding Wagons album.

Massive Wagons by Dean Chalkley

Energised and animated, Massive Wagons have an anthemic album to share and they set the bar high with the intensely catchy Fuck the Haters. An opener that has fire and features a chorus that everyone will love singing along to. Moving straight into something more indie-riffic but just as memorable with the groovy Please Stay Calm. Before they get very punky with the madcap and frantic Generation Prime, a track that is so lively, it could get the dead up and dancing. A little bit of Skindred’s Benji Webbe never does any harm either!

With the first three tracks, Massive Wagons showcase all the different elements that make them such a delight to listen to. A handful of gleeful hits and there’s still so much to come.

Massive Wagons delivering rock riffs galore on A. S.S.H.O.L.E, pop-punkiness on the eager sound of Skateboard and the stadium rock grandness of Gone Are the Days. Another trio of tracks that cut through the malaise of life thanks to Massive Wagon’s penchant for pure and unbridled catchiness. Seriously, it can’t be understated just how many blood-pumping, head-banging and dance-along moments exists on this album.

The halfway point comes with a bang as the title track has some killer lyrics, sung with unarguable passion and not withstanding a bit of tongue in cheek humour. Followed by another groovy guitar banger in the form of Giulia, an old-school punk rock hit with Germ and the passionate statement that is Never Been a Problem. For all the fun Massive Wagons are having on this album, it doesn’t mean they don’t have things to say.

Further proof coming in the form of a trio of anthems to close out the album in style. From Big Time’s rocking groove to Sawdust’s massive sounding chorus and No Friend of Mine’s powerful end. More Massive Wagons gold.

It’s a quality slice of heavy rock music with all these outside influences adding fresh and exciting touches.
