Din Of Celestial Birds Announce New Album ‘Takeoffs & Landings’ + Sign With Big Scary Monsters!
Din Of Celestial Birds reveal their brand new full length studio record Takeoffs & Landings – a concept album all about adventure, travel, and the journey of life, literally and figuratively, encompassing all the stresses and triumphs. Din Of Celestial Birds will be flying beside their new label Big Scary Monsters (American Football, Lambrini Girls, Arcane Roots, Love Rarely, Dimscûa) – celebrating their 25th anniversary as a label this year. Takeoffs & Landings will land on August 7th on Vinyl, CD, Digital and Streaming, available on multiple coloured vinyl variants. The album will be simultaneously released by A Thousand Arms in the US and Tomato Records in China.

‘Takeoffs & Landings’ is the title track and first single to be taken from the quintet’s forthcoming album, which will open the record. This catchy number races forwards with a strong ascending melody founded from their dense three-guitar union, and booming drums evoking rocket boosters firing up. The glistening guitars sound like they are singing as soaring synths draw you into the band’s widescreen technicolour dreamscape. The song later climaxes into a showcase of crunchy metallic riffs brought smashing down to Earth with pulverising drums. ‘Takeoffs & Landings’ is inspired by Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who completed the very first spacewalk back in 1965. Leonov’s presence can be felt in the euphoric highs of the song as he observes the beauty of the Earth from the void of outer space. ‘Takeoffs & Landings’ draws from guitarist and songwriter Andie Gill’s love of film and gaming scores. “A huge chunk of my degree was based around film soundtracks and how certain tricks are used to manipulate emotions,” he explains. It was actually Crocodile Dundee’s theme music that gave Gill his true spark of inspiration; “I liked how it sounded, so I learnt the main melody”. ‘Takeoffs & Landings” accompanying music video is spearheaded by guitarist Tom Hazlehurst, who filmed the band members in their practice room performing in front of a greenscreen. Hazlehurst then meticulously worked on the animation effects and many cross-edits; the result of nearly 100 hours of work. The music video is vividly colourful, featuring dancing animated airplanes, and captures a childlike and jovial side of a band aspiring towards the stars.
Din Of Celestial Birds have quickly become one of the UK’s most championed and hard working heavy progressive post-rock bands, known for their vibrant, visually engaging live performances. The Leeds based instrumental quintet have often been praised for their ability to bring a sense of storytelling and heart-on-your-sleeve emotions into their elegantly textured and energetic songs. This desire for connection has seen Din Of Celestial Birds and their fanbase flock to bigger and wider stages, nesting at the likes of ArcTanGent, Damnation, dunk!, Can and StrangeForms festivals, soaring across multiple headlining tours since the release of their debut album.
The instrumental quintet have chosen to work once again with producer and studio engineer Joe Clayton (also guitarist of Pijn) at his own sonic altar No Studio. The band doubled their studio time with Clayton compared to the recording of their debut, fully intending to allow more time for experimenting, playing with sound and finding those off-the-cuff moments. Building intensity and atmosphere with a surging momentum comes so naturally to Din Of Celestial Birds. These songs promise more contrast, twists and turns, and will showcase heavier riffs and inject more energy than ever before; but also finding moments of reflection in the calmer passages, all informed by the motif of travelling and adventure. The sleek album cover was designed by Jim Cork at Explore Studio. The band were drawn to Cork’s minimalist geometric designs. Aside from making multiple appearances at ArcTanGent and Damnation festivals, Din Of Celestial Birds have shared stages with an eclectic array of artists including Explosions In The Sky, Emma Ruth Rundle, Employed To Serve, Ranges, Hundred Year Old Man, Respire, Hidden Mothers, Underdark, and many more.
The goal is that people listening to the album will feel something; either from the experiences they have had that the music evokes, or that the music takes them to new places.
