EP Review: We Kill Cowboys – Back from the Dead (Mongrel Records)
Cape Town’s We Kill Cowboys, the five-piece rock outfit known for their explosive blend of punk rock, grunge, and post-hardcore, are ‘Back from the Dead’. Ushering in a new chapter that will be released on December 5th, 2025.

What a badass release, and how exciting is the potential future of this band!? All because this new EP features six banger efforts that genre-bend, are filled with potent emotion and energised accessibility, deliver flashes of wildness, and leave the listener begging for more.
Most will be head over heels in love with the record from the start as Dig Deep’s moody and melodic power transforms into something impressively vivid, animated, and stupidly infectious. Whereas Cherry Lips is all about its rocking intro, the venom that the vocals have, and the delightfully heavy section at the end. Easily my personal favourite track of the EP.
Although I can’t really say anything here is lacking. Not when the temperamental melodies and grungy sound of Android puts a big smile on my face, even if the lyrical content is darker and more impassioned. I just love the vocals on this EP.
Not when Burn the Witch has such a powerful chorus. Nor when Sweat and Blood showcases an inspired band delivering something a bit more experimental (the burst of heaviness is downright hilarious, such is the intensity), and not when Dead End gives us such a varied ending. Where I can’t decide if I should bang my head, shake my hips, or close my eyes and sink into the emotion of it all.
Fuck it, how about doing it all at once? We Kill Cowboys have crafted a genuinely compelling EP here and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
