Album Review: Anomos – Triumvirate (Self Released)

Edinburgh, Scotland based melodic death and thrash metal band Anomos are back. Releasing their brand-new album, ‘Triumvirate’ on March 14th, 2025.

Let’s get those neck muscles working, as following a short intro that is heavy on atmosphere, Oathbreakers arrives and it has power, fantastical power, but oozes darkness. An ominous feeling hangs over the entirety of the track, and no amount of punchy riffs, screaming soloing, pounding drums, and scathing vocals can hide that.

In Desolation is next and it makes for uncomfortable listening, not just because Anomos step up their thrashy game here, but because it has a nihilistic feel that is based more in reality. That it just so happens to come with a thrilling level of crunchy brutality, is a bonus. Though, it also showcases some instrumental flair that pushes a boundary or two.

Something that isn’t a one-off either as the following All That We Know shows with its melodic/clean vocal switch up, and with the way the groovier intensity of Void Walker plays out. Although it is fair to say that both are ‘out and out’ head bangers too. Both thoroughly enjoyable and a strong showcase of a developed musical palette.

That is notable throughout too. Anomos are a creative bunch, drawing from a wide expanse of influences, and putting their own interesting touches on things. Such as how they turn a story about a missing cat into something epic, sinister, intense, and hilarious. That’s Eviscerator of Lochend and while it may be based on Monty the cat, it’s a loving tribute to all the furry gits who enjoy nothing more than causing a bit of carnage. Have you ever lost your shit to a song about a cat? You have now.

Following that, there’s a welcome chance to catch the breath with the title track, a shortish piece that starts off in mellow fashion, but grows in cinematic grandeur as it plays out. It’s the perfect piece to come before the finale of Down We Fell, an imposing finale inspired by Dante’s Inferno. There’s nothing quite like this track on the album, even if it feels so connected to everything heard so far. It’s the sign of a band so in tune with themselves, pushing each other to new levels, and crating music without boundaries. That this feeling just so happens to come wrapped up in a huge melodic death metal package is so damn special.

A tight, varied, and horn-throwing listen with layers upon layers of detail that will keep a metalhead satisfied for months to come.
