Calva Louise – Edge of the Abyss (Mascot Records)

This new record from the alternative metal, rock, whatever you want to call them, band comes highly anticipated. Even if a lot of the tracks on the album have been out there for some time. Dire Thorns – The Happy Man (Metal Vision Records)

Showcasing a really visceral and raw sound that combines death metal and nu-metal, is potently experimental, and utilises multilingual lyricism, Dire Thorns really stand out from the heavy pack. They’re a fascinating bunch, ugly and harsh, but with undeniable anthemic ways.

Ward XVI are back, more aggressive than ever, not only offering up some of their heaviest music to date but also distilling their theatrical horror creativity into something daringly accessible. This is Ward XVI, but not quite as we know them, and isn’t that bloody exciting?
