Interview: Getting to Know Before the Sirens

Before the Sirens are a metalcore band with a rock twist and recently released their new EP, ‘As It Is Above, So It Is Below’. In this interview we get to know them a little better.

1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.

Hi! Nice to meet you. We’re Before the Sirens, a classic metalcore band from Hertfordshire, UK. We’ve been playing together in various bands since we were at school (so in some cases nearly 30 years!) but have been playing in this band together since 2021.

2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

I previously called us classic metalcore band and to be honest this is the closest definition I have heard when trying to place Before the Sirens in a genre. But we have been described as heavy metal, melodic metalcore, hard rock and, my personal favourite, the heaviest rock band you will ever hear!

3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?

Our new EP dropped in December last year so we are busy trying to get that in as many earholes as possible and supporting it with some shows in 2026.

4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?

We love writing music together and we really get a kick out of sharing it with people so we are really excited to share it with friends, family, fans and new listeners and hopefully people dig it.

5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.

Our music is deeply personal. Musically, it’s influenced by our very favourite bands and lyrically and thematically, it is influenced by the world around us. I talk about loss, addiction, heartbreak and the darker side of our society in my lyrics and this really encapsulates the dark, emotive sound we are trying to create.

6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?

That’s very true and I hear that a lot from other songwriters. The ability to address your state of mind and feelings in a way that doesn’t necessarily need to be obvious or direct can be a huge relief. I am quite open about getting sober nearly 3 years ago and how that has affected him over the years, particularly in our single ‘Low’. But it is a hugely important outlet for me to be able to write about how I feel and what I am going through at any particular point in time, it always has been since I was a teenager.

7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?

Making music has always come naturally to us. It is how we hung out when we were teenagers. That aspect of being in a band is the easy and most enjoyable part for us.

8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?

This is the element that is the biggest challenge for any band. The way that bands are discovered, followed and bought into is so different to what it was when we first started out and it requires a constant stream of content for fans and viewers to consume. By consequence, we have never tried to match the level of output from some bands and try to ensure that our output is relevant and of a decent quality. It also helps us to enjoy creating it but ultimately, we, like all other bands, are hoping that viewers become fans when they see or hear our material.

9. How do you make this part of things enjoyable, and fulfilling, for yourself?

We make sure we are true to ourselves with what we produce. At heart, we are just big kids with a ridiculous collective sense of humour so we like to use that in our content just like we do on stage.

10. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?

As I said earlier, we love people to hear our music, on whatever platform they prefer. So if you could check us out on your preferred streaming platform that would be awesome, and if you like it, come and say hi on our social media channels!

11. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?

We (like almost every band these days) have regular jobs and families at home so when we’re not doing all the things that come with that, genuinely, our way to let off some steam and enjoy ourselves is to get in a soundproof room and make some exceptionally loud music together: It always has been.

12. Where can people find you?

We’re on all the usual social media platforms and youtube but all the links to those can be found at www.beforethesirens.com.
