EP Review: Vanitas – Journey to the Sun (Self Released)
UK progressive metal outfit Vanitas recently released their brand-new EP, ‘Journey to the Sun’. A high-intensity concept exploring the themes of adventure, hope, hardship and triumph. Placing the listener as the protagonist of their own chronicle, Vanitas embark on a new journey and are inviting you to join them.

Ambition realised. Vanitas’ rise has been nothing short of staggering to witness, and this exceptional new EP is the culmination of all their recent work. Work that includes several previously released singles, and work that makes the concept that the band are showcasing tangible.
Beginning in cinematic fashion, the spoken word into of In Absence of Light sets the scene, before the powerhouse track that is Eclipse arrives in mighty fashion. A track that showcases Vanitas’ heavier and more intense side, from both an instrumental and vocal perspective. Those hoping for a big chorus won’t be left wanting as it has one (one of many on the EP), but it’s the track’s hyperactivity that leaves the biggest mark in the end.
Lucid Dreams comes next and it’s, arguably, one of the EP’s most anthemic efforts. It’s not just the vocals, which are immense, it’s the progressive power of the guitars and drums, as well as vibrant cinematic flourishes, that make this such an unforgettable listen. Sitting comfortably alongside Your Demise, which offers listeners one hell of a neck workout and is Vanitas at their most dramatic sounding.
It really is staggering to hear just how definable their sound has become and how comfortable their evolution has been. This EP really does feel like such a step-forward for the band and they continue to show off the layers to their sound with the potent Behind the Mask (blast beats!), which has vocalist Jade soaring high and pushing herself to the limit. The last two minutes of the track are particularly special.
The title track is a short intermission, delivering more cinematic layers and spoken word storytelling. Leading into the finale that is Solaire, a gorgeous closing track that feels so grand, but is layered with melodic beauty, heavy power, and has a chorus that is to die for. It’s another brilliant track on an EP of brilliant tracks.
If you’re not on the Vanitas train yet, this EP will guarantee you’re jumping aboard. It is the perfect showcase of who they are and the perfect distillation of everything that makes them great.
Maybe we were golden all along.
