EP Review: The Larches – Nihilistic Majesties (Self Released)

UK alt-metallers The Larches will release their brand-new EP, ‘Nihilistic Majesties’, on July 24th, 2026.

The Larches are not a band easily defined as their approach to alternative metal comes via the world of sludge and even then, they do strange things with it. Strange but enjoyable things and one of the EP highlights comes early on with the wild Raxidermy. Here you’ll get a feel for their raw intensity and how they keep control of the chaos.

Smother the Hero then drops the tempo but ends up sounding even heavier, especially as the heft of the instruments are matched by some grim sounding vocals.

Whereas Corrosion of Conscience is frantic and the ugliness of the rhythm is complimented by the sense that at any moment, the entire song will collapse. Before Drought flips things significantly by being psychedelic and dramatic in a more experimental way. I’m not completely sold on this one, even though it’s one hell of a rich experience.

Finally, The Larches return to more familiar territory with Dopeslut, a groovy head banger that ends things in satisfying fashion. Leaving an overall positive impression that shows off plenty of talent and plenty of reasons to be excited for their future. They’re certainly doing it their own way.
