EP Review: Necronomicon Ex Mortis – Zombie Blood Nightmare (Self Released)

Chicago horror-death fiends Necronomicon Ex Mortis return with ‘Zombie Blood Nightmare’, out February 20th, 2026.

Horror, either the gut-churning kind or the tongue-in-cheek kind, has always sat comfortably next to death metal, especially when a band wholeheartedly embraces the combination. Necronomicon Ex Mortis are one such band, delivering a delightfully garish, grim, and gory showcase of raw horror infused death metal. Featuring six tracks that will leave you with nightmares.

An ugly expulsion of noise, albeit with some unexpected groove, is what greets the listener as they find their backs up against the wall in Left to Die. The dead are closing in, there’s no escape, and the furious tempo reflects the sound of your heart pounding in your chest.

With No More Room in Hell, all hope is lost, and Necronomicon Ex Mortis display this nihilistic point of view with heavy and furious precision. Whereas Chopped Up and Burned is unbridled intensity spread liberally across seven minutes (your head will get sore from how hard it is being banged) and Lumbering Blood Sucking Freaks has relentless riffing and voracious vocals.

Overall, it’s an impressively detailed listen with more layers of death metal than you first might expect. Easily satisfying the hunger for horror and heavy metal that a listener might have, especially when something as ghoulish as Hungry for Brains and Démoni come along. Necronomicon Ex Mortis living up to both their name and the title of the EP.
