EP Review: Judo CHOP! – Cosmic (Self Released)

Judo CHOP!, the six-piece melodic punk band from Melbourne, have released their brand-new EP, ‘Cosmic’.

 

 

A very likable band with a thrilling sound that has pop-punk vibes, but leans more towards the punk side of things while having a ton of hearty melody and emotive weight. Something immediately notable about the daring atmospheric start that is Cosmic. An intro piece that wouldn’t be out of place on a shoegaze record. It is lovely though and eases us into the energetic punk-infused fire of Oceania. Judo CHOP! bringing the energy and the intensity in a delightfully catchy effort.

Although catchy efforts are par for the course with this band and the following Fearless and Stranded prove that. The former is such a highlight, seeing Judo CHOP! go the fast and frantic route, but basing the core sound in a poppy, punky, rocking kind of world. It’s an amalgamation of lovable genres and the infectious elements that come them. Whereas the latter has a rawer feel, but doesn’t lose the infectious elements that make this band (and EP) so memorable.

So memorable in fact that they are able to revisit a track from mid-2023, and give it a remix/refresh. It’s Conquer, and it still slaps. Featuring, stop me if you’ve heard this before, plenty of energy, punk spirit, and alternative rock groove. It’s as much a sing along as it is a move along, and this 2025 version just makes it neater.

What Judo CHOP! do so well is balance melodic tones and punk-fire energy and it makes every moment of this EP addictive. So much so that the end sneaks up. Suddenly it’s Parasite, the finale, and although it’s a unique track from the band, it flies by in a blur of excitable punk rock. It is interesting to hear the band really get more elaborate here and push the boundaries of their melodic punk and expectations around the style.
