EP Review: Embodiment – Cryptomorph (Self Released)

Bristol extreme metallers, Embodiment return with their brand-new EP ‘Cryptomorph’, which marks Embodiment’s first release since 2020’s Palingenesis and signals the beginning of a new chapter for the band. Introducing guitarist Sam Godding and drummer Will Pearson to the line-up. ‘Cryptomorph’ will be released on all streaming platforms on Friday 24th July 2026.

It’s a mighty fine day when we have new Embodiment to listen to, and this slab of garish savagery is welcome. A four-track effort that comes with undeniable hostile intent, it’s a return that is not for the faint-hearted, and an opener like Jeopardy in Idolatry doesn’t disappoint. Furiously fast and aggressive, it’s the ‘embodiment’ of extreme, albeit with appealing technicality and thrilling detail.

That’s a great opener, but Resonance Cascade arrives in such a flurry of furious heaviness that focus shifts immediately. It’s really cool, but what makes this one even more special is that it’s a track with a chorus, one with some epic clean singing.

The guttural viciousness and blazing technicality that the band make seem so natural is back with aplomb on the following Beneath the Skin. Yet, once again, it’s just one part of an electrifying listen, and the sparks continue to fly as the excellent As They Spread Their Infection delivers more vibrant riffs, pounding drums, and scathing vocals. The cherry on top being a wickedly good guitar solo.

It’s a brilliant EP that proves unequivocally that the world is that little bit better, and nastier sounding, when Embodiment are around.
