EP Review: At War with the Sun – Remembrance (Self Released)
At War with the Sun are an atmospheric funeral doom power trio from Worcestershire, conjuring droning, sludgy soundscapes for fans of Thou, Neurosis and Khanate. On September 12th, 2025, they will release their brand-new EP, ‘Remembrance’.

Funeral doom, as a genre, is an acquired taste. You don’t need me to tell you that, and you’ll surely know what to expect should you press play on something described as such. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t bands doing transformative things within the genre and one such band that is well worth paying attention to is this one, At War with the Sun. Who cleverly, and delicately, add psychedelic elements, alongside relentless doominess, captivating drone, and memorable melody. It’s one hell of a listening experience, and unsurprisingly, gives us two tracks that can simply be called huge.
It’s not just about the length of both tracks either, it’s about the tempo, the weight, the shifts, and the feeling that both create. Something made even more effective when vocals arrive. Here, At War with the Sun add an extra layer of darkness to an already bleak and black listen.
I think it’s quite a daring release, which is saying something as the funeral doom world can be a bit restrictive. One of the more fascinating aspects of the record is the cinematic vein that runs through the thing. It might not be the first thing you think of when you hear the EP, but on multiple listens and as the layers begin to unpack, it’s there.
Just another impressive aspect of this record, and what At War with the Sun have accomplished here. Funeral doom, yes, but not quite as we know it.
