Album Review: Vomitory – In Death Throes (Metal Blade Records)

Three years after the release of their critically acclaimed comeback album ‘All Heads Are Gonna Roll’ in 2023, Vomitory are back with their latest beast, ‘In Death Throes’. Out on April 10th, 2026, via Metal Blade Records.

Legends with a new lease on life having shed the ‘comeback’ skin, Vomitory continue their relentless march forward with a brand-new album of extreme sounds. Combining hair-raising heaviness from the old-school days with thrash twists and clear death metal focus. The result is beastly, in the best way possible.

Chances are, before you even hit play, you’ll know if you’re going to like this. Vomitory aren’t an anomaly in extreme music and having been around since 1989, in some form or another, they’ve refined what they do to a very sharp point. Yet, a record like this comes with blunt weight that has the capacity to cave heads in too. Weight delivered via vicious riffs, pulsating solos, hammering drumbeats, wicked hooks, and violent vocals growls.

There are ten tracks and each hit with the force of an out-of-control bus. Remember that scene from the first Final Destination? That is what listening to In Death Throes is like and, personally, I love it, but I can see why it’s not for everyone.

Part of its appeal and lack of appeal comes from the old-school focus, where, production aside, if you told a person that it was released a few decades ago, they might believe you. Although don’t let that lead you to believe that Vomitory are bereft of fresh ideas and across the ten tracks, long terms fans will find a surprise or two.

Surprises like the groovier sound of For Gore and Country and Erased in Red, two of the album’s most encourageable head bangers.

When it all comes down to it though, what most will remember is remorseless speed, feral intensity, and blood-draining heaviness. All delivered with impressive focus and the kind of tightness that comes from experience. It doesn’t matter how many times Vomitory spit out a crashing cacophony of brutality, shred the soul to pieces with devilish soloing, and bring up the contents of the stomach, it’s always thrilling.

Provided death metal is your jam, mind you. Though even if it’s not, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that Vomitory are one of the best to do it. We’re well beyond talking about their return. Now it’s all about the future, even if that does involve looking back a fair bit too. In Death Throes effortlessly lives up to a legacy while also having a ton of forward momentum too.
