Album Review: Uncultivates – This Will Become Clear Later, Like The French Revolution (HORSEBOX Records)

Uncultivates, the mathy post-hardcore group of riff-totin’ cowboys from Southern (Ireland) Texas, will release their debut album, ‘This Will Become Clear Later, Like The French Revolution’ on February 6th, 2026, via HORSEBOX Records.

It’s a miracle that Uncultivates have sobered up enough to get this release out, but here we are. When whiskey farming isn’t bringing in the coin, and they’ve been able to see through the haze brought upon by strong liquor, they create music. Chaotic music that sits somewhere in the noise, post hardcore, and mathcore genres and is built on the bedrock of fun first.

Don’t take Uncultivates too seriously, they certainly aren’t, but also don’t let yourself believe that these buckaroos aren’t a musically potent force. Trust me, come the end of this album, you’ll be happier than a possum up a trouser leg.

Crashing and smashing their way into the nearest saloon, the demand for attention is made even more impossible to ignore with a frenzied intro and the following I Am Your God Your Father And Your Boss. Uncultivates unleashed, ten pounds o’crazy in a five-pound sack, and delivering robust post-hardcore intensity with serrated edges. At times, I get an At The Drive-in vibe, at others, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and even a bit of Converge here and there.

Uncultivates are a boiling pot of influences, but thanks to the talents in their ranks, they sound like their own thing. Especially as there is plenty of ire directed at modern, worldwide issues. Great Minds Think of Mike, Every Day I Wake Up On The Bonnet Of A Different Car, Oliver… there might be plenty of ‘tongue in cheek’ aspects to these tracks, plenty of catchy elements, some groove, punk spirit, and creative twists, but when it comes down to it, we have track after track of crashing and smashing post hardcore heaviness and that is what we will all remember.

Well, that and the fact that you can take the ‘boys’ out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the ‘boys’. Evident by an atmospheric Interlude that creates the image of sitting around a warm fire on a cool night somewhere in the wilderness with your posse. One that turns into a bit of a whiskey drinking session. Hair-raising stuff all round.

Paying tribute to an Irish legend… sort of. Flatley is the sound of Uncultivates having fun. A track with potency that just so happens to be a little shapeless in places, giving it a chaotic feel. I reckon they’re probably a dab set of Irish dancers too.

As short as it gets on this album, the brilliant madness of Uncultivates might not be better summed up then how it is on the somewhat obnoxious effort that is Dread First. Proving, once and for all, that for all its mathy post hardcore stylings, it’s a record with variety.

They might not be the most successful of whiskey farmers, but as far as making music goes, they have the brightest of futures, provided they can avoid the feared Rental Snake and its bite. Uncultivates at their most manic, yet, at their most addictive too. Personally, I like it when they go wild, bucking to the point where it threatens to send the listener crashing to the dusty ground.

Yeeing their last haw, it’s The Ice Bed World Tour of North America, a finale with more liberal use of melody, vibrant rhythms that have a progressive touch, and increasing intensity that sees the vocals (already so strong across the release) reach throat-tearing levels. A person isn’t born a cowboy, they become one and across ten bright and brilliant tracks, Uncultivates earn their spurs. Now let’s hope they can sober up enough to bring this show on the road.
