Just when I think I’ve had my fill of alternative metal albums this year (it’s becoming one of the more oversaturated sub genres), along comes Seven Blood to remind me that when a band is as locked in and as on fire as they are here, I’ve always got room for one more. Seven Blood have arrived, and the world of alternative metal is all the better for it.

Beginning in dramatic and explosive fashion, House ≠ Home displays the emotional strength within the band, how their honest and open life appraisals blend with their anthemic abilities, and how heaviness and harmonies can deliver such exciting sounds. All aspects, amongst others, that the foursome are able to expand upon as the record goes on.

First, with a thumping, synthy anthem called Cold Eyes that is filled with heart and soul but urges the body to move and the head to bang. Then with a sharp and melody-laced jab to the temple courtesy of No Breakout. A track that oozes moody atmosphere and features a big chorus. Before Monsters gives us power and passion displayed via a hefty instrumental section that smoothly pulls back to a more melodic style when needed.

Each track hits hard, but it’s not just the music that proves to be so compelling as Seven Blood’s authentic lyrical content makes for an enthralling listen. Especially when the words are being delivered with such power and poise. The words and voice behind it all are one of the most impressive and immersive aspects of the record, that much is undeniable.

Still, you won’t ever find me complaining about something as melodically vibrant as Hourglass. Nor will you find me turning my nose up at Killing from the Inside, a track that blends lively groove, sleazy bass hums, and foot-tapping beats. I dig both, but not quite as much as I dig To the Unknown, an iconic Seven Blood track already.

Starting with sombre melody and haunting vocals, the initial feeling around this track is quite morose. You can hear it, but more importantly, you can feel it. Then, it powers up, and the grander melodies and chunkier alternative metal soundscape has a more ‘uplifting’ sound. Although you’d be hard-pressed to not feel the emotion in it regardless. It’s very powerful, very memorable, and I love it.

From there, it’s a bit of a race to the finish, with Not Your Misery, As We Bleed, Strangers, and Fall from the Sky showcasing a variety of punchy and passionate alternative metal anthems. All of which puts focus on the powerful vocals but backed up by expressive instrumental sections. You’ll hear soaring melodies, energised choruses, heavy twists and turns, and a guarantee that each will get stuck in the head for ages.

A head-turning debut that turns emerging talent into bone fide stars.
