It’s time to thrash… but with a fresh twist! Nervosa are back, settled (thanks to founding guitarist Prika Amaral establishing herself as the vocalist with 2023’s Jailbreak), and in a riotous mood. Delivering an album that expertly blends old-school thrashy ferocity with modern death-infused technicality and anthemic focus. The result is a beast of a record, featuring a manic set of tracks that go varying degrees of hard.

Sounding meaner than ever, Slave Machine opens with the aptly titled Impending Doom, which happens to have some dark and ritualistic atmosphere at the start, before turning into a rampaging blast of speed, heaviness, and intensity. It, alongside the title track, showcase Nervosa at their finest. A little bit of the old-school, a little bit of the new-school, and a whole lot of their head banging inducing ways.

Something that continues into Ghost Notes, Beast of Burden, You Are Not A Hero, and Hate. Putting an emphatic stamp on the first half with furious heaviness and bundles of head banging inducing groove.

It’s hardly a surprise though, is it? Nervosa have been smoothing off their rough edges for some time now, and it’s fair to say that at this stage, they reached a level of refinement that everyone can appreciate. All while not compromising the infectious intensity that drives things forward with force. This is heavy freaking metal; the pit starting, horn throwing, foot stomping, hair flinging, and head banging kind.

I love it in all its uncomplicated, raging, spitting, and snarling glory. Although a lot of that can be attributed to Prika’s vicious vocals.

She sounds immense, but this is a united Nervosa and that chemistry makes a huge difference. Delivering us more rampant riffy bangers like The New Empire, vitriolic bangers like 30 Seconds, eye-watering and arsehole tightening bangers like Crawl for Your Pride, and straight-up aggressive bangers like Learn or Repeat. Putting it simply, I was never bored, even with twelve tracks on offer.

It’s a fiery album with tons of flair, and right up to the end, it stays exciting. Nervosa making sure that every metalhead that lasts this long is left feeling like they’ve been chewed up and spat out. An easy task when it’s The Call and Speak in Fire wrapping things up. The former, showcasing a wicked guitar solo (the album does lack in this department) and the latter, going imaginatively dark.

Strong stuff all over. Nervosa delivering an exciting evolution, and showcasing their most complete and consistent sounding album to date.
