Album Review: Gods Of Sometimes – Gods Of Sometimes (Falling Dome Records)
Brad Davis (bassist of Fu Manchu) and Andrew Giacumakis (guitarist/vocalist of Moab) have formed the duo Gods Of Sometimes. Folk-tinged space rock that serves as an alter ego of sorts to the heavy music they’re both known for. Their self-titled debut album will be released on July 21st, 2023, via Falling Dome Records.
It’s not going to be too much of a surprise to learn that the members behind Gods of Sometimes aren’t moving too far out of their lanes with this new project. This debut album features nine tracks of trippy, psychedelia-flavoured space-rock that you can really relax too. Mellow and catchy, it drifts and soars comfortably through the mind from the moment the title track arrives to the moment Just Another One ends things.
Both tracks, along with everything else on the record, are experimental and unique. Easy to chill out to, but with layers of complex ideas that keep you fully engaged. Check out a track like Dawn of the Tin Man, a dreamy and melodious listen with some excellent punchier moments. Or a track like the rhythmically pleasing and anthemic In the End, where a thrilling guitar solo sets the mind spiralling into orbit.
How about the ambient spacey feel of Hand on the Hide? Or the emphatic weirdness of Watching for Satellites? Or even the heavily emotive Wherewithal? Gods of Sometimes certainly has creativity and are more than willing to let it flow out with very little filtering. Something that makes the whole album so much more enjoyable and so much more interesting.
