I think we can all agree that Evergrey really have nothing left to prove and can, rightfully, do whatever they want. So, it should be no surprise to anyone that this new album has a fair few creative twists, least of all the thick melodic vein that runs through it. Often adding a touch of positivity, making things feel lighter, and daringly catchy. Driven by more prominent keys, well balanced with big and heavy riffs, and powerful vocals. Consider this a warning, a lot of this album is going to get stuck in the head.

Following a nice and dramatic intro called Welcome to the Pattern, things get heavy and infectious courtesy of The Shadow Self. The drum and riff combo in the verses hit hard, but it’s the chorus that really stands out, especially as it is so different for the band.

Whereas a track like that has immediate attention-grabbing properties, the title track is more of a grower, but rewards those with patience. Although its lack of initial impact isn’t helped by the fact that it’s then followed by The World Is on Fire, a track with gorgeous vocals and a heightened sense of melodrama that just hits so right.

I find tracks like that bold, something that also sums up the mighty Heaven, with its old-school Evergrey twists, and the emotive The Script. The former’s cinematic layers sit so nicely alongside punchy drums and soaring vocals. Whereas the latter gives us big keyboard melodies.

How about Leaving the Emptiness though? An Evergrey track like no other, and not just because it is a ‘happy’ song. It’s defiantly not them, but also clearly them too. Entertainingly fun and delightfully catchy, I think it’s one of the album’s catchiest efforts.

Though it should be clear by now that fans of big, infectious, and powerful tunes won’t be left wanting at any stage of the album and that continues into the latter part of the record. First, we have Longing, which can be best described as an Evergrey ballad, which should seriously excite most listeners. Then, we have A Burning Flame, a punchy and passionate head banger that features guest vocalist Mikael Stanne.

Before Call Off Your Lions and Chains of Shame bring us up to the end in varied fashion. The former’s cinematic qualities are undeniable, and it might be one of the most harmonised sounding tracks on the album. Whereas the latter is Evergrey at their heaviest, delivering a riotous display of fast-paced instrumental heft.

Finally, and to wrap things up, it’s The Prophecy, and it’s a heart-wrenching ballad infused with an inordinate amount of melancholic drama as only this band can do. An outstanding closing track, ending things in satisfying fashion. Evergrey have delivered something special… again. Expressive, emotional, effective, they continue to defy expectations and the result speaks for itself.
