Album Review: Ashen Horde – The Harvest (Released)
Los Angeles extreme‑metal shapeshifters Ashen Horde will release their brand-new album, ‘The Harvest’ on May 1st, 2026. Their fifth full‑length album and the first to feature new vocalist Karl Chamberlain (Putrefier, Alcyone, Necrotic Remains).

It’s all change, to some degree, as the current state of Ashen Horde shifts in two notable ways. The first being the obvious change in vocalist. Fear not, Karl Chamberlain is an absolute beast. The second is less obvious, but quite intriguing. You see, this isn’t a concept album. Which might not sound like a big deal except Ashen Horde have always done concept albums.
Instead, the band have gone with an overarching theme, one that surrounds endings, but not always in the literal sense. It’s a fascinating idea that immediately appeals, even more so if you know the kind of music this bands creates.
Music that comes with epic weight, drawing from the darker side of metal, layering in tons of atmosphere, and experimenting with melody. It might only be eight tracks long, but what we have here is substantial.
From the moment it begins, it’s clear that this album is Ashen Horde in a very creative place, and with that comes a level of genre-blending that will take new listeners by surprise. They’ve always been a band unafraid of combining different ideas, bringing in a wealth of influences, and investigating fresh directions, but there is an argument that this is them at their most progressive sounding. It’s certainly got a hell of a lot of technicality, yet there’s also so many moments that can be described as ‘simple’, and it’s how Ashen Horde combine this which ends up impressing the most.
I find it a very interesting listen, which isn’t always the word that comes to mind when talking about something that sits (uncomfortably) in the extreme camp. I will say that I think it’s a fool’s game to try and pigeonhole this band. They’re simply too diverse and this album embodies that perfectly.
Across the eight tracks, Ashen Horde take the listener on one hell of a journey. One filled with blackened ferocity, epically delivered progressive detail, glorious harmony, chest-thumping and hair-raising heavy metal, and so much more. No two tracks sound alike, and while that does make the album a little disjointed in places, the flow is impeccable and the variety ensures attentions remain firmly focused on what this band is doing here.
One listen becomes two, which becomes three, and then four, and so on. Even though it might not seem like the most replayable record at first, you’ll be very surprised by just how addictive it is. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Ashen Horde are back and sounding stronger than ever.
