Album Review: Chalk Hands – The Line That Shapes the Coast of Us (Dog Knights Productions)
Released on March 27th, 2026, via Dog Knights Productions, ‘The Line That Shapes the Coast of Us’, is the new album from Screamo/post-rock quartet Chalk Hands.

I really liked what Chalk Hands did on their debut album, ‘Don’t Think About Death’, so it pleases me no end to see them back and back with something equally likable. Hell, I’ll go further and say that I love this record, and all because they’ve taken what they did with the debut, developing and refining their sound, showcasing a bit more experimentation, and a spectacular combination of post intensity, and dramatic melody.
It’s an album of the year contender. Simple as that.
Hyperbole? Not a chance. Not when a track like Ember Lane opens the album in such impressive fashion. It’s got such potency, but it’s also emotionally fraught and weighty. The instrumental tempo switches, expressive vocals, and strong sense that Chalk Hands are barely keeping it together is startling.
It’s a firing pistol for an album that doesn’t have much in the way of drops in quality. There’s Pauvre de Moi, which creates tension with its flareup of heaviness. There’s Day Glow, a near-six-minute showcase of gazy melody with creative heavy rock twists, and there’s Bite Marks, a messier, more explorative listen that has flashes of brilliance and a troubling atmospherically charged end.
This part of the album is where you can really hear and feel the expansion of Chalk Hands and how they’re no longer easily definable.
You know you’re having a good time though when each new track is eagerly awaited and with Breaking Waves, Chalk Hands hit another impossible high. Delivering a focused and commanding display of perturbing beauty. It might be short, but it leaves an impact. As does the equally short A Comfort You Borrow, especially as this is a hyperactive Chalk Hands. I really do love how, instrumentally, they can go from zero to a hundred in an instant and the vocals never feel left behind.
The latter part of the album certainly doesn’t change the winning formula up, although it is interesting to hear a darker side to the band courtesy of Peregrine, as well as a very heavy end. Whereas A Surefire Way to Disappear oozes striking misery, Rewired Eyes’ strives to get the blood pumping in the veins while also warming the soul, and Your Skin is Gold delivers a captivating display of post and alternative rock.
Honestly, I was spent by time Sleep Tapes arrived, but as an outro, it eased me out nicely.
The Line That Shapes the Coast of Us is very special.
