EP Review: Heavensgate – A Heart Is a Heavy Burden (Pure Noise Records)

Australian heavy hitters Heavensgate will release their brand-new EP, ‘A Heart Is a Heavy Burden’, on 24th October 2025 via Pure Noise Records.

Back, and seemingly back with a bit of a chip on their shoulders, Heavensgate’s new EP is a vitriolic and visceral listen (for the most part). Spitting and snarling from the word go as the group unleash a torrent of high-powered metalcore-infused intensity with Burden of Being and Oblivion. A showcase of heaviness that has so much potent aggression that it starts to lean into deathcore places, as well as showcasing a certain amount of technical sharpness.

Rain has the band moving in a sludgy direction, while retaining the energetic ‘core’ aspects of their sound. Here, it becomes clear that Heavensgate are evolving, and with that is even more power. If you like your music to sound utterly chaotic and pissed off, you’ll enjoy the hell out of this. It is very heavy (breakdowns to make your asshole tighten), manic throughout, and downright dangerous sounding.

There’s a fascinating tone shift with Petrichor, at least with the first half as we get something cold, methodical, featuring gazey guitar melody and dreamy vocals. Then it starts ‘heavy-ing’ up. The development is really natural sounding, and it evolves the track impressively. It’s a huge Heavensgate track, and one of their best.

Expecting an eruption of wild and wacked out carnage after? Think again, as Darling Blue is hugely melodic, filled with wistful ambience, and has a smile-inducing chorus. Heavensgate not just showing just how varied they can be, but how much heart and soul their music can have. It’s great, but so is A Fawn Flayed, and here they go absolutely apeshit for want of a better word to describe the fast and frantic intensity of this finale.

Heavensgate are back and this EP proves that it’s a return well worth celebrating.
