Weekly Release Review Roundup: Monday 21st July 2025 – Friday 25th July 2025

From high powered rock, to demented death metal, theatrical tongue in cheek horror, dark doom and sludge, anthemic groovy rock, and much more. All these releases have been reviewed by us and are out now!

The Dirty Nil – The Lash (Dine Alone Records)

Digging deeper, in an introspective way, The Lash is The Dirty Nil in a bit of a mood. A darker mood where they aim to showcase a ‘back to basics’ mentality. Simplified and focused, but as anthemic as ever. Trust me, you can still have a lot of fun with this band, but they might give you a bit more food for thought as you do this time around.

Pulpit Vomit – Hospital Lens (Rottweiler Records / Broken Curfew Records)

Demented music that sits somewhere in between the chaos of grindcore and the ferocity of death metal, Pulpit Vomit make one hell of an impression on this debut album. Not necessarily a positive one as there are polarising aspects, least of all the eye-watering and ear-bleeding intensity of it all, but also not a negative one, as there’s a ton of talent behind this noise.

GWAR – The Return Of Gor Gor (Pit Records)

Gor Gor has returned and has stories to share, and GWAR are showcasing this not only with three brand-new tracks, but with an exclusive 32-page comic that really goes into depth about where Gor Gor has been all this time. Spoilers: it’s a little weird.

Of course it is though, this is GWAR, and they’ve been delivering the weird and wonderful (amongst other less savoury words to describe them) for 40 years. Can you freaking believe it!? Love them or loathe them, no one can deny the impact this band has had and that’s not changing anytime soon.

Cordyceps – Hell Inside (Unique Leader Records)

If you thought Cordyceps’ debut album was savage, well, you’re going to be left seeing stars once you hear this follow-up. An album that doesn’t just beat you around the head with its aggressive intent, but an album that targets the most painful parts of the body and pulverises. Featuring nine absolute beasts showcasing the most brutal of blackened death metal styles with added technicality.

Dark Bloom – In the Solace of What We Can’t Possess (Self Released)

A band with ‘future rock stars’ written all over them thanks to their accessible anthemic ways, Dark Bloom are band you best get familiar with because they’re going to be huge, and this is just their debut EP.

Goblinsmoker – The King’s Eternal Throne (APF Records)

Darker and more horror-infused than ever, the story that Goblinsmoker has been telling over this immense trilogy reaches its epic conclusion here and it’s fair to say that the horrors of real life are having some effect on the music that the band create. Years of experience, developing and growing as artists, and living life, it’s no surprise that Goblinsmoker would lean into darker territories here, especially as the story conclusion isn’t a happy one.

False Gods – Lost In Darkness And Distance (Self Released)

False Gods - Lost In Darkness And Distance Artwork

A really good example of how heaviness can be achieved using intelligent song structures, tones and emotional rawness. It is traditionally heavy too, with the riffs, the drums and the tone really adding that in but it is far from extreme, in speed or style, but manages to leave a lasting impression, and a lasting mark on your soul.

Tallboy – House Of Glass (Self Released)

A band filled with life; Tallboy’s debut EP is one hell of a hyperactive effort. A record that will keep listeners on their toes as Tallboy deliver heart racing rhythms, anthemic choruses, and emphatic bursts of abrasive noise.

Lowdown – Alpha Omega (Damage Records)

Limber up those neck muscles, stretch the legs, and work out some of the kinks in your arms and shoulders because you’re going to need all of them, and more, while listening to this record and you don’t want to hurt yourself. Let Lowdown deliver the smackdown via a cacophony of heavy riffs, thick groove, soaring melody, and punchy metal intensity.
