Interview: Talking Gaming with (Chuck Dakota – Bass) of The Chuck Norris Experiment

In this interview we talk gaming with bassist Chuck Dakota of Swedish rock band, The Chuck Norris Experiment.

1. Let’s begin by going way back to the past! Specifically, your childhood and what your earliest memory of playing a video game is?

I am the youngest of three brothers and my older brothers got Super Mario on NES when I must’ve been somewhere around 4 or 5 years old. Somewhere around there they let me play it on occasion.

2. At what age and stage of your life did you start to find yourself hooked by gaming and was there any particular thing that bore responsibility for that?

I guess from said NES console we had at home, but we were three boys fighting over it. So it could get quite chaotic over who’s time to play it was. And as time went on we got SNES and the game collection grew over time.

3. If you could point at one or two games that defined your childhood, what would they be?

Easy, The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past.

4. What about a system? Everyone has one that holds a very special place in their heart. SNES, PS1, N64, Xbox 360, Phillips CD-i? What’s yours and why?

We had the NES and SNES when I grew up. My friends got the PS1 and N64 and I played like hell at their houses. But it was actually when I got the first Xbox console that I remember so well, because this was the first console that I bought with my own money. I played it on a 21” CRT TV.

5. Do you have a particular game genre that you enjoy more than any other? If so, what is it and why? Also, what’s a game genre you almost always avoid?

Huge fan of RPG’s. Love the gaming component of making your own character. And I’m really not a fan of JRPG, I really don’t like the style or the linear story line.

6. How about multiplayer? Did you have a game that you found yourself sinking untold hours into online or do you just prefer the single player experience?

Oh no, I don’t play multiplayer. I don’t have the time, skill or determination to get my ass kicked by some 12 year olds from across the world. No I prefer the tranquillity of playing in my own tempo and discovering the different worlds at my own pace.

7. What is a game or franchise that you think you’ve sunk the most time into to date and what is a game or franchise that you’ve never quite been able to get into?

I think it’s a tie between Zelda and the Elder Scrolls. I have been playing Zelda a lot throughout the years, but as soon as I played Morrowind I was hooked from day one, all through Oblivion and Skyrim. But Zelda has always been there to play from time to time as well.

I have tried, but massively failed, to play any Final Fantasy games, I really can’t stand them.

8. Over the past couple of decades, what development within the video game industry has been revolutionary?

The graphics development. The games that comes out today can really blow your mind visually. It is insane to think about where it all started with like Pong or all the 8-bit games and where we are today.

9. Likewise, what development within the video game industry has been mostly negative for gamers overall?

I have to say perhaps graphics here as well, because instead of really great stories companies tend to focus on making their games visually appealing, instead of focusing on the whole gaming experience.

Also that it has become such a massive industry. Where making money is the biggest drive force, with early access, loot boxes and all the other money grubbing bullshit.

10. What is one aspect of gaming (all parts) that you consistently find yourself getting nostalgic over?

That I once had time to play a whole evening and/or night with either friends or alone. Now it’s all work, family, band and everything else that has to fit the schedule. I find it very hard to have time to relax with a good game these days.

11. Likewise, what is one aspect of gaming (all parts) that you’d happily never experience again?

I don’t know, perhaps when a PS disc didn’t read, the disappointment we experienced when we wanted to play something and then that error message appeared of the TV.

12. Focusing on the now, what are you currently playing and what is enjoyable about it?

I actually started a new run at The Witcher 3, in a futile attempt to play it all again before the release of the new DLC.

Thank you very much for all the fun questions!
