Interview: Getting to Know Rattle Bones (Written)

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Rattle Bones style of rock ‘n’ roll is chock full of isolation blues, riff-happy rave ups, guitar noir, and three- part harmonies. In this interview, we get to know them a little better.

1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Hello, I am Gary Martin, singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Pittsburgh PA rockers Rattle Bones. I got started in the 90’s and been playing music for most of my life.
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

I tell ‘em loud rock n roll; it’s as simple as that.

3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?

I, along with the band, are busy with all of those things. As I type, I am sitting in LAX airport await a flight home from some west coast tour dates. We recently made our entire debut LO available on the streaming sites, and are currently in process of recording LP #2.

4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?

I love being busy, being occupied by creative endeavors.

5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.
I am inspired by positive people who do things, rather than those who fear life and trying new things. I utilize this attitude in my musical journey.
6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?

Music has always served an important role in my life, keeping me from falling prey to the many negative things that exist, especially in today’s climate. Rock n roll keeps you young!

7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?

There is a lack of infrastructure for bands, songwriters, and creatives these days. We keep afloat by supporting each other.

8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?

I do not really enjoy the online social media aspect to music. It seems to make things disposable. The amount of effort that the creatives put into their art should never be relegated to a disposable status. But, I do my best to keep our band relevant via social media. I create all of our art, which makes me happy to know when it’s posted in a social media forum.

9. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?

To support Rattle Bones, or any band that you enjoy, buy something. Let us know you’re out there. We never see anything tangible from streaming or YouTube plays. Buy the music, or a shirt, whatever you can afford. And thanks!

10. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?
I love to surf when I can, long bike rides, drinking some scotch & listening to records.
11. Where can people find you?
