Getting to Know Mama No Likey (Interview – Written)

Blending fierce rock riffs, sharp wit, and femme fatale energy, Mama No Likey has officially entered the chat—and they’ve got something to say. Their new single ‘Mrs. Davis’ is a rebellious takedown of gender norms and glossy housewife tropes, told through the eyes of a woman who finally snaps in style. In this interview, we get to know the band a little better.

1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.

Mama No Likey is Troy Gale on guitar and Will Haupricht on drums. We’ve been together for three years writing and designing dozens of songs. We teamed up with Hannah Nalley about a year ago and have all clicked creatively together. Troy is from the Central Coast of Australia, Will from Detroit, and Hannah from Missouri. We’re all currently based out of Los Angeles. Troy and Will were introduced by a friend at a rehearsal studio and booked a studio to jam and the two have been writing songs together ever since.

2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

AC/DC meets The Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Joan Jett.

3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?

All of the above (laughing). Honestly, it’s music promotion. We’ve released two songs and are about to upload our third. But the uploading platforms, the playlist curator sites, the streaming platforms, radio stations, interviews for magazines. All of it.

4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?

Releasing our music on the streaming platforms enables people from all over the world to hear us. We’re thrilled to know that people in the UK, France, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, etc., are listening to us. And getting feedback from people all over the world is also exciting, both positive and negative. We just love being in touch with so many different people and perspectives.

5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.

It’s been a major amount of work, but we’ve doing it step-by-step. We had to figure it all out as we moved along, from developing our sound, to getting gigs, to recording, and now releasing and promoting. And, yes, it feels great to create songs that people enjoy and then to share them with the world. It feels amazing really.

6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?

There’s no question that being creative expands the mind and uplifts the spirit. It fires up the right brain and probably releases endorphins. There’s nothing like it. At this point in our lives, none of us cannot not play music and be creative, which is special.

7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?

Balancing music with jobs, relationships, other activities is demanding as hell. Staying together as a band is also difficult. We’ve had our issues around alignment and priorities, but we’re thankful we’ve stuck it out. All of us believe we’re just getting started with our music and the longer we can stay together, the better we will sound.

8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?

Everything you just said is our biggest challenge right now. Honestly, we’re navigating it the best we can and probably aren’t doing it well. Who knows? Not only is it a challenge to manage all of the platforms, we’re finding it a challenge just to keep us all together regarding what we want to do with them all. It takes a lot of organizing on our part to try and manage it all.

9. How do you make this part of things enjoyable, and fulfilling, for yourself?

That’s a great question. Because at this moment, it’s a lot work on a number of fronts. But we did just shot a video for our upcoming single called Kings and Queens. The location was a really cool green room in North Hollywood. All of us could feel the creative energy flowing from the walls of the place. So, yeah, we are enjoying parts of the journey.

10. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?

Please follow us on Spotify, Instagram, and our website, mamanolikey. Our third song will be coming out in late July and has an accompanying video. And our intention is to release a fourth and possibly a fifth by the end of the year.

11. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?

Troy surfs, Will meditates, and Hannah does ballet. But music is something that we all enjoy so much, too.

12. Where can people find you?

Definitely our website at www.mamanolikey.com and social media @mamanolikey and on our Spotify page mama no likey. We post a lot to keep people aware as to what we’re up to.
