EP Review: The Machinist – Towers (Self Released)

The Machinist, the nihilistic, blackened, industrial death metal band have released their much-anticipated new EP, ‘Towers’.

Three tracks that were initially conceived during the writing phase for The Machinist’s latest album, ‘Contempt for Life’, fans of what they did there will find themselves comfortable here. Whereas those coming in fresh might find themselves in disconcerting territory, courtesy of experimentation that turns a short EP into something grander and more noteworthy.

Opening with Sagittarius in Bloom, The Machinist unleash a cacophony of mechanised savagery that comes with thick layers of destructive darkness, before, and suddenly, introducing atmospheric synth and deep layers of harmonised melody. It’s brilliant, and the way the track continues to grow and grow makes it one of the most unforgettable listens this year.

In contrast, Of Creation and Cancer sees The Machinist focus on delivering a wailing, gnashing, throbbing, and crashing display of industrialised heaviness. It’s devilish, and while it has a latter synth twist that turns the track in an even more extreme industrial direction, it remains an overwhelmingly intense experience.

Finally, it’s Cellular Catharsis, the most expressive track of all. Partially because it is nearly eleven minutes long, and partially because it has many peaks and valleys. Switching from layered speed and heaviness to vivid melody and grim synth in clever ways. It’s an experience that flows in unforgettable fashion, showcasing the depth of The Machinist’s talents and how interesting their brand of nihilistic darkness can be.
