EP Review: Sorewound – Espanto (Cursed Monk Records)

Hailing from Costa Rica, Sorewound is a sludge metal project with punk influences composed of musicians from several different scenes within the Costa Rican underground. Their EP, ‘Espanto’ will be released on December 5th via Cursed Monk Records.

Ugly, harsh, and heavy; for nearly twenty-five minutes, Sorewound assault the senses with a cavernous cacophony of filthy sounds. An EP rooted in sludge, but not beholden to it. That means we get a rawer, metallised edge that has a thick punk vein running through it. Which is a side to Sorewound that I absolutely dig and makes the weight of The Gorge (Where Things Come to Die) more palatable. Though it does seem foolish to call anything on this EP, palatable.

It’s a riffier blend of tempos and styles with Miseria, before Spite Fuck (Te Detesto) creates one hell of a scene, and Relicarios’ sludge is downright soul sucking. Sorewound don’t just make a hell of a lot of noise, they focus their attack, and the result is music that you feel in the pit of your stomach. Case in point, the elaborate, drawn-out, and viscously intense finale of Vomitous.

Sorewound – Espanto Track Listing:

1. The Gorge (Where Things Come to Die)
2. Miseria
3. Spite Fuck (Te Detesto)
4. Relicarios
5. Vomitous
