EP Review: Profiler – Masquerading (Self Released)
Rising nu-metal quartet Profiler will release their huge new EP ‘Masquerading Self’ on December 4th, 2025.
It does feel like we can’t move for ‘nu-infused’ bands these days, but modern bands that embody the sound? Those are fewer and because of that, a band like Profiler stands out. Especially if your gateway into heavy music came through nu-metal (it was mine) as the whole record then takes on a nostalgic tone.
However, I don’t necessarily think that’s a good thing.
No shade on Profiler, who I do think are a good band and the EP is likably heavy, with plenty of groovy bounce and infectious rhythms, but I struggle to get past how dated it feels and how in an attempt to vary things up, it ends up sounding more like a bunch of experimental singles thrown together. Which I guess a lot of EPs are, but this isn’t a cohesive release.
What it is though, is a passionate release and Profiler throw their all into delivering something convincing. I think if you don’t have a storied history with nu-metal, you’re going to get on with this release more than I did.
Don’t get me wrong though, I think the likes of Illusion, Dope and Upgrade are bangers and spent a good hour plus ‘bopping’ to the record. I just don’t think it’s going to have much impact on me long term. That’s me though. A 41-year-old burnt by years of lacklustre nu-metal and an ‘up and down’ revival that never seems to end.
