EP Review: Plague Pit – A Whispered Curse (Road to Masochist)

Bristol’s Plague Pit will unleash their debut EP, ‘A Whispered Curse’ on October 3rd, 2025. Out via Road to Masochist, who will it on 10” transparent red vinyl, with Eggy Tapes providing a cassette alternative, or addition.

Stare long enough into the void, and you might find it stares back. Plague Pit are what exists in the deepest and darkest recesses, and the four tracks of this EP showcase the blackness within.

Opening with the dread-inducing The Seventh Bell, a destructive barrage of blackened death metal, Plague Pit deliver unnerving and uncomfortable heaviness from the start. Confidently breaking free of genre-constraints but keeping the tone rooted in the side of metal that can be called ‘grim’.

Case in point, the different parts of Womb of Orchids, Part methodically heavy, garishly obnoxious, and grubby sounding. Part fast, frenetic, and furious sounding, and part atmosphere laden. The switch around is jarring, but addictive.

Then there is The Weeping God, a track that burns with deathly fire, but has bullish flourishes that add some groove. As the track goes on, the guitars get more melodic, which just adds a whole new dimension to Plague Pit’s sound. It’s the best track on the EP, but the gap between it and the following title track is minuscule. As here we get huge riffs, bundles of energy, dangerous beatdown vibes, and a fascinatingly drawn-out finish that is steeped in atmosphere.

A debut to remember. Plague Pit are something special, so go join them in the void.
