EP Review: ONI – Genesis Pt. II (Self Released)
Alt-metal trailblazer Jake Oni’s breakout project ONI will release the new EP, ‘Genesis Pt. II’, on August 1st. The record follows the critically acclaimed first chapter, Genesis Pt. I, that was released in January and features 6 alt-metal anthems produced by writing partner and Spiritbox bassist Joshua Gilbert.

Genesis Pt. I was impressive and really helped put ONI on the map, this follow-up is only going to solidify that and gain the project even more fans. All because it comes with impeccable alternative anthems that are filled with passion, power, emotion, and honesty. This is the ONI way.
Beginning with What I’ve Become, ONI immediately delivers memorable melodrama dominated by soaring melody that has flashes of intensity that increase the potency of the track. It’s a bar setting track, and it is complimented by the dark tone, heavier focus, and experimental (from an electronica perspective) Drug Me to Sleep. This is ONI flexing anthemic muscles, and while Reset isn’t the most impressive of the bunch, the intense verse vocals really help make it stand out.
What is impressive though is Illumination and Float. The former’s synth is delightful, and it has this gloomy injection that gels really well with a big sounding chorus. Whereas the latter is unbelievably anthemic and highly emotive, with an accessibility that comes from the project’s ability to think outside the box and draw from different genres. It’s what helps make it sound fresh and ensure every single person is still paying complete attention come the end and the retro-tinged heavyweight banger that is Retribution.
Anthemic alternative rock and metal heaven. ONI is well on its way to being one of the most notable names in alternative music.
