EP Review: Last Hyena – Suspect Your Elders (Self Released)
‘Suspect Your Elders’ is the third studio EP from Bristol-based instrumental-rock trio Last Hyena, out on September 26th, 2025.

A band capable of creating deep immersion with a single track, let alone four, Last Hyena return with several impressive efforts that take the listener on a deep and rewarding journey. A powerful journey with intense quirks throughout, expertly meshing different genres together to create something wholly unique to them. It’s detailed and complex, but it’s also anthemic and exciting, kicking off with the vibrancy of Bless This Unbeatable Miracle Priest.
Here you’ll get the first taste of their potent musical combination, where angular math-rock blends with atmospheric post-rock, dramatic alternative twists with melodic turns, unpredictable heavier flareups, and so much more. It’s pretty awesome, but that applies to all four tracks, especially Make It Sound French. An anthemic track with captivating nuance and strong feeling that lines up with the band’s incredible effort to express emotional weight without words. It’s very cleverly done.
Suspect Your Elders then extends the absorption most will have with the record via its experimental style that is weird and wonderful. Intense all the way through, but from different angles. Sometimes that intensity comes from a bit of chaos, a bit of danger, a bit of calm, and more. Before this immense EP (and contender for EP of the year) wraps up with Surfer, a noisy and gaudy showcase of effective creativity. It’s one of the more elaborate efforts, but like everything else on the EP, it fascinates. How about vocals too? Amazing.
It really doesn’t get better than this.
