EP Review: Firmament – Ashes & Awakenings (Self Released)
Firmament, the five-piece metal band from Nottingham, UK, have released their much-anticipated debut EP, ‘Ashes & Awakenings’.

A mighty fine EP that showcases how much creativity Firmament have in their ranks and how, clearly, they have spent time refining their sound.
Kicking things off in melodious and poppy fashion, the vocals are at the forefront (for good reason) of a mellow and cinematic sounding intro. Hold on to your ass and get your neck muscles warmed up though, because the metal arrives with aplomb and suddenly, we’re listening to a high-powered heavy and groovy banger. The chorus is so damn anthemic.
It’s a great start, but for me, the energy of Through Tempests is where it’s at. The thump of the drums, the roar of the riffs, and the potency of the vocals combine impressively. Yet, what helps this track stand out even more are touches of flair that crop up.
It’s an aspect of their sound that helps make Shadow Game and Caged equally compelling efforts too. Especially as the latter shows off more of their deep melodies and just how powerful the vocals can be. The word that comes to mind is ‘soaring’.
Finally, it’s Cry for the World, and one final huge sounding effort. Where, this time, the vocal power is matched by screaming riffs that make the body shake, the melodies touch the soul, and the chorus proves to be so damn anthemic. Another undeniable crowd-pleaser, just like the rest of the EP.
Firmament have arrived.
