EP Review: Carach Angren – The Cult of Kariba (Season of Mist)

With the upcoming EP ‘The Cult of Kariba’, Carach Angren return to the story that first defined their identity. Drawing from historical legends and obscure regional folklore, the band revisits the myth of the White Lady from Schinveld, this time expanding it with a new, sinister figure: Kariba. Inspired by real poems, forgotten theatre plays, and occult symbolism, this EP introduces a hidden cult intent on resurrecting Kariba—a poisoner and alleged witch whose spirit carries a legacy of vengeance. Out October 17th, 2025, via Season of Mist.

Masters of their craft, few bands within the extreme metal sphere can match the story-telling chops of Carach Angren and, once again, they mesmerise and horrifying in equal measures with this new record.

Black metal, but black metal with theatrical flair and symphonic pomp, filled with creative twists and incredible storytelling potency. Carach Angren’s creativity is at a high point as they look back to the inspiration behind their debut album, 2008’s Lammendam. It might be a concise set of tales, but as is so often the case with this band, its impact is felt regardless.

Delivering horror and beauty in equal measures, but in their inimitable way. The cinematic intro of A Malevolent Force Stirs sets the scene, especially with its spoken word coming via multiple languages. Before a torrent of sumptuous, blackened fire is poured into the mind via the intense Draw Blood. Carach Angren rising up with an explosive showcase of extreme metal and symphonic synergy, revealing the blood that the stories’ cult in question is willing to spill.

Perhaps the most layered track of all, especially from a story telling perspective, The Resurrection of Kariba is, unsurprisingly, about the cult’s attempt to wake her, but interestingly, it also tells a story about how we got to her execution. Told through a creative and skilful combination of fiery drama, devilish heaviness, and grandiose melody. Matched only by the unsettling atmosphere of Ik Kom Uit Het Graf, a track that is daringly industrial and a stark reminder of just how salaciously sinful this band can be.

Finally, it’s Venomous 1666, a furious riff-driven blackened blast of esoteric heaviness. Kariba’s spirit is reborn, and the living are about to find out what that means. Incredible and overall, another unforgettable effort from a band that thrives on being unforgettable and never fails to deliver.
