Album Review: YURT – VI – Rippling Mirrors of the Other (Self Released)
‘VI – Rippling Mirrors of the Other’ is the sixth album by the sonic elders of YURT from Dublin, Ireland. Since 2006, the band has traded in an idiosyncratic form of progressive noise incorporating prog rock, prog metal, prog punk with elements of doom, psychedelia and jazz. The new album will be released on December 6th, 2025.
I like YURT, not just because their brand of weirdness is so unique, but because they are so talented, the line between genius and madness disappears completely. It is neither, it is both, and there isn’t a single moment where the album doesn’t have a twist or turn that delights, disgusts, confuses, and amazes. It is the YURT experience and there’s nobody quite like them, especially in the Irish scene.
So, what does this latest incursion into psychosis sound like? It’s like walking down the street blindfolded, high, and someone has tied your shoelaces together. It’s like waking up in the dead of night, heart pounding from a nightmare, and seeing a corner of darkness grow. It’s like being the right kind of drunk – you know? Where you’ve got a good buzz on, you’re feeling lively, and the DJ has just put on a dance floor banger. It’s like when you’ve been hoofed in the groin… and you kind of liked it.
Does any of this make sense? Good, because YURT delight in confounding and challenging, and here, they push that to a whole new level, another new level, as anyone who has heard one of the previous five albums can attest to the fact that YURT are always pushing upwards and onwards.
Their creativity is, once again, off the charts and their experimentation results in an album that is downright indescribable. It makes this one of the hardest reviews I’ve had to write all year, simply because I don’t know how to accurately summarise the addictive, exciting, horrifying, eccentric, and uncomfortable sounds on show here.
It is brilliant, but it’s also nonsense. You don’t listen to YURT, you experience them and this latest effort embodies their beautiful chaos perfectly. As far as the word progressive goes and how it is used to describe music, this album is one of the most decadent progressive offerings of the year
I don’t know what else to tell you. It’s six tracks of the most unique music released this year. You’ll either love it, or you’ll hate it, there is no in between, but I guarantee that if you are willing to experience it, you will come away having had a fucking experience. Bravo YURT, not many bands have that effect.
