Album Review: Spider Kitten – The Truth Is Caustic To Love (APF Records)

Spider Kitten, the bastard offspring of Pink Floyd, Killdozer, and Eyehategod, will release their new album ‘The Truth is Caustic to Love’ on June 27th, 2025, via APF Records.

Effortlessly cool and egregiously obnoxious, Spider Kitten’s new album is not an easy record to summarise, let alone something that can described to the extent that their brand of madness deserves. Press play and you’ll hear doom, the sludgy and grubby kind, as it’s the most prominent feature of the album. However, you’ll also hear a cacophony of different genres across the fourteen tracks as Spider Kitten skillfully blend it all together.

There is no talking about the album without calling it exactly what it is from the start. It’s weird. It’s a weird f**king album and you’ll either love that or you’ll hate it. It’s really hard to be indifferent about the record, there’s too much going on, and all of that demands a strong response, one way or another.

So, here’s mine.

It’s so unique, I can’t help but love it, and as a fan of all the different parts that make up Spider Kitten’s sound, it was always going to appeal. Especially when it comes together in such a way. Don’t take all my mewling about it being freaky as a negative, I like it freaky, and Spider Kitten get really freaking freaky here. Yet, there is sense and their experimental ways are thought out. Take a track like The Dose, an early strong effort, that has some really thick groove. Or take a track like Woe Betide Me, a track that has a desert rock feel, but is so melodic, it’s almost impossible to believe this is the same band that crushes with tracks like The Spoiler, Gold into Shit and Wretched Evergreen.

The more I listen, the more addicted I become, and the more I start to understand Spider Kitten. They’re still mostly impossible to fathom, and their nature is such that I expect each and every track to be absurdly different, but the more time spent with this album, the more I see its quality. Which I think will happen for just about everyone who dares to take a chance on this very unique record.

If variety is the spice of life, then Spider Kitten are going to blow everyone’s f**king taste buds into smithereens with the smorgasbord that is this album.
