Album Review: Cavalera – Morbid Visions (Nuclear Blast)

Max and Iggor Cavalera should need no introduction. Known from their time in Sepultura (as founders), Soulfly (Max only), Cavalera Conspiracy, and so much more. Once again, they have teamed up under the name Cavalera to re-record Sepultura’s debut EP, Bestial Devastation (1985) and debut album, Morbid Visions (1986).

Both re-recorded releases also feature a brand-new song. They will be released on July 14th, 2023, via Nuclear Blast.

If you thought the re-recording of Bestial Devastation was a bit redundant, then you’re probably going to think that here too. Especially as the Cavalera brothers have gone to such pains to ensure the raw energy of the original is still at the forefront.

Whereas the debut Sepultura EP might have passed many people by, Morbid Visions, the debut album might very well be the first thing folks ever heard. It features some of Max-era Sepultura’s biggest tracks and is beloved to this very day.

Fear not, Cavalera know this and have been so careful to ensure this re-recording is all about making the experience a clearer example of what their vision was back then. All eight tracks of the original are given touches to enhance the instrumental power and clarity of the vocals. With the duo also turning back the years and adding an additional new track that sounds like it was always meant to be on the album all along.

So, what more can we possibly say about Morbid Visions that hasn’t been said over the decades since its release? It might not be your favourite Sepultura album. Hell, it’s arguably not even the best Sepultura album, but it is a thrash and groove-infused banger regardless. Tracks like the title song, Troops of Doom, War, and Funeral Rites sound as strong today as they did 36 years ago.

If anything, Cavalera’s re-recording of Morbid Visions is just a great excuse to re-listen to this exceptional album from a band that is so important to metal in general.
