Horror Movie Review: My Only Friend’s A Corpse (2025)

Written and directed by Jack Bayless, and coming from producer Key Tawn Toothman, My Only Friend’s A Corpse is a horror comedy with heart. Delivering a memorable experience that comes in at a tight 70 minutes.

Sam Christensen stars as Danny, a punk rock kid with no friends, who stumbles upon a corpse. This is not just any corpse though, this is a living corpse, and it needs Danny’s help. Which Danny is resistant to do, of course, but the corpse makes a compelling case and suddenly, we have a buddy movie.

It’s as insane as it sounds, but hold on, because there is more, a lot more.

The corpse (voiced by Sam Christensen also) has a mission and it’s a big one. He is on a mission to track down and kill God and woe betide anyone who gets in his way. However, unknown to the pair, an angel sent from heaven is on route to put a stop to them. Who will get to God first and will Danny, the poor human roped into this, get out alive?

It’s quite an absurd story and I do have to commend the imagination behind it. However, the fact that it’s played quite straight makes it even more impressive as this allows the film’s horror to shine. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of comedy moments, great comedy moments, and the banter between Danny and the corpse never gets old, but there’s a chance this premise would have fallen flat had Bayless not taken it seriously.

This combo, mixed with strong practical effects, a retro vibe, and brilliant acting across the board, makes this a joy to watch. Where faults, and there are a few, can easily be dismissed in favour of good old fashioned horror fun.

My Only Friend’s A Corpse was a nice surprise. You never know what you’re going to get with indie horror, especially one crossed with comedy, and one coming from a first-time director. Yet, it’s clear a ton of effort was put into making it an unforgettable watch, something that extends to other important areas such as the score (I also really like how the film is lit).

I found myself invested in Danny and the corpse’s journey, and wondering just how a showdown with God would go. Unsurprisingly, it’s as mad as everything else. My Only Friend’s A Corpse is one hell of an experience.
