Album Review: Fires In The Distance – Circadian Promise (Prosthetic Records)
Melodeath band, Fires In The Distance return with their new album, Circadian Promise, set for release on the 12 June via Prosthetic Records.
For a band that has steadily built a reputation for blending melody, atmosphere, and emotion into modern melodic death metal, Fires In The Distance arrive at an important moment with their third full-length album, Circadian Promise.
Originally formed as a solo project by guitarist and songwriter Yegor Savonin in 2016, Fires In The Distance quickly evolved into a full band and one of the more compelling names in the melodic death metal scene. Their 2020 debut, Echoes From Deep November, introduced listeners to a sound rich in melancholy and atmosphere, while 2023’s Air Not Meant For Us expanded that foundation with grand orchestration, thoughtful song writing, and an increasingly cinematic approach.
Now signed to Prosthetic Records and following a successful North American tour alongside Dark Tranquillity and Amorphis, the Connecticut outfit return with Circadian Promise, set for release on 12 June 2026. Featuring new vocalist and guitarist Brendan Hayter, the six-track album explores themes of mortality, acceptance, mental health, and perseverance. Recorded with producer Dave Kaminsky and enhanced by the orchestral work of Randy Slaugh, Circadian Promise promises another immersive journey through the band’s distinctive blend of progressive melodic death metal and sweeping atmosphere.
Speaking about the themes explored on Circadian Promise, Savonin states:
“This album is a little bit darker than the others. It delves into the concept of spiritual death and losing your soul while still living and explores the existential concepts of accepting and coming to terms with and embracing the bleaker side of realities which we will all face at one point or another.”
Fires In The Distance is Yegor Savonin on guitars, Brendan Hayter on vocals and guitars, Craig Breitsprecher on bass and backing vocals and Jordan Rippe on drums.

It is an album that comes with just six songs, but one shorter track aside, we are looking at eight and nine-minute epics throughout. Thankfully, Fires In The Distance make every second count.
We start with Of Radiance and Levitation, and it is impossible not to get swept up in its grandiosity. Symphonic sounds pull you in before excellent, tapping drums join the fray, then guitars arrive. Layer by layer, it grows into something majestic and within a minute I am fully invested. The song twists and turns as it evolves. The melodic touches fade back as harsh vocals take over alongside heavy riffs and thumping bass lines. I really like the vocals. They are harsh but not guttural, packed with power, depth, and emotion. Melodic guitars drop little solos over bridges in a song that deals with depression and conveys that feeling perfectly.
At over nine minutes long, Fires In The Distance have ample opportunity to showcase their immense song writing ability and creativity. A slower section sees twinkling keys return alongside a prominent bass line and softer drums that completely mesmerise. The build-up returns with gorgeous clean vocals, excellent harmonies, and plenty of room left for the heaviness to crash back in. It is a stunning song.
To You, Author of My Fade sticks around the nine-minute mark but ramps the aggression and energy up considerably from the outset. Superb drumming and powerful riffs get your head moving while an undercurrent of melody keeps you emotionally invested. The guitars are exceptional, blending intricate riff work with soaring melodic bursts, while the harsh vocals bark with enough variation in tone and delivery to keep things feeling fresh. The drums and bass make you want to charge into the pit, while the lead guitars and tempo shifts encourage you to simply sway and let the song wash over you.
It is a glorious contrast, and I am only a couple of minutes in. Naturally, there is plenty of room for creativity and transitions. Clean vocal passages are woven seamlessly into the music and become more prominent as the track progresses. A beautiful melodic guitar passage slows things down as keys add subtle bursts of atmosphere before a stunning guitar solo takes centre stage. Circadian Promise is proving to be something very special.
Firstly, Lightless Days of a Songless Bird is an incredible song title. It is poetic in its own right, and the track itself is another showcase of masterful musicality, song writing, and creativity across its near nine-minute runtime. I love how the harsh vocals follow the lead guitar melody in the opening verses. I love the symphonic bridges that connect the sections, and the drumming throughout is immense. The riffs are powerful, the lead guitars hypnotic, and the overall result feels inspired. An instrumental section packed with keys and dual harmonised guitars is gorgeous, while the bass-heavy passage that follows introduces a darker, more threatening atmosphere before another excellent solo offers a moment of respite.
Fires In The Distance continue to make these lengthy songs feel remarkably short, constantly introducing new ideas and fresh dynamics. A drum-led section backed by subtle atmospheric effects and synths gives way to mesmerising lead guitar work that takes the listener on an emotional rollercoaster before returning to the heavier side of the band’s sound with even greater force. Damn.
Featuring guest guitar from Dark Tranquillity’s Johan Reinholdz, By This Time Tomorrow carries a lot of emotional weight, with melodies that feel contemplative and personal. The slower stomping riffs and beats combine nicely with the harsh vocals before lead guitars, layering melody upon melody, take over and drop sounds that have you wanting to close your eyes and simply let it wash over you. The added guitar creates waves of harmonised melody before a softened slowdown with a spoken word passage really ramps up the atmosphere. The drums begin to build once more and then, with a screech, we enter a superbly powerful guitar solo. It’s a shorter song, but no less impactful than the longer tracks around it.
Once the Silence Takes Your Place brings us back up to the nine-minute mark and you won’t be surprised by now to find out that I love it. I love the keys in the intro, adding a little light to much darker and more intense riffs and beats. It’s a heavy track with a strong post-metal feel. Harsh vocals, chunky grooves and pounding rhythms are delivered alongside little twinkling bursts of keys and synth melody. I’m really impressed with how much emotion Fires In The Distance manage to convey in each song on Circadian Promise and it’s no different here, especially when the clean chorus arrives, sung emphatically with a real epic feel. Heavy verses, clean choruses, atmospheric touches in the background and layers of melody; it might sound like modern melodeath 101, but it’s better than that.
Circadian Promise comes to a close with Agonal Dreaming and ensures a home run for Fires In The Distance with another stunning track. I adore the guitars in the intro. They instantly hook you in and get you feeling something. The ascending melody while the riffs and drums exude power is such a great listen. Groove-led verses with harsh vocals get your head banging as we build towards lead guitar bridges and then back into the heavy stuff. The vocals feel darker, the drums hit harder and then, with a sudden stop, the lead guitars blaze in alongside a harsh chorus elevated by shifting tones, growing melody and twinkling atmospheric touches in the background.
I know I tend to use a lot of words, but there aren’t enough that I know to properly convey the beauty and feeling shining from this song and this album. As the track continues to move through different phases, we get atmospheric slowdowns, a huge solo, a heavy instrumental section and more crunchy, groove-filled verses before being led out by one final emphatic chorus. It’s a perfect ending to a perfect album.
Circadian Promise is a stunning album. Emotionally weighty, beautifully written and packed with purpose, it never wastes a second despite the lengthy runtimes. Every song feels meaningful, every melody serves a purpose and every transition feels natural and earned. What impresses me most is how quickly these songs seem to pass by. Fires In The Distance fill every second with creativity, emotion and excitement, balancing crushing heaviness with soaring melody and introspective depth.
Powerful, intelligent and completely absorbing, Circadian Promise is one of those albums that grabs hold of you from the start and refuses to let go. An exceptional release.
