Album Review: Ghorot – Obsidian (Lay Bare Recordings / King of the Monsters Records)

Ghorot, the blackened doom-metal trio, are back with their highly anticipated third full-length record, ‘Obsidian’, out on April 10th, 2026, via Lay Bare Recordings and King of the Monsters Records.

A trio making an impossible amount of noise, this new Ghorot album is a heavy and harsh listen with tons of layered intensity that freshens up the sound of compressing blackened doom. From the moment Void Drinker arrives in a cacophony of guitars and drums, alongside howling and roaring vocals, it becomes perfectly clear that this is an album guaranteed to leave a mark on the psyche.

Yet, for all their blackened wickedness, Ghorot know how to show off, and this album isn’t lacking in flair either.

One of the more hypnotic efforts is Lascaux, with its thick, chuggy riffs and hellacious mix of vocal styles. Sitting alongside the notably blacker A Seeping Infinitude and the crushing doominess of Beneath the Soil. Ghorot taking a sinful approach to the former and a lethargic approach to the latter. Both tracks shift and shimmer inordinately but always stay routed in harsh sounds. The latter’s descent into chaos is deliciously compelling and it ends up being one of the more experimental efforts of all.

With Lafayette, Ghorot chance things up a bit by keeping it short, getting fuzzier, and then hitting the gas pedal for one hell of a noisy finish. Before nailing the ‘go big and go home’ mantra with the atmospheric Deluge. Where gloomy melody meets striking blackness and, slowly but effectively, it transforms into a glorious doomy beast with layers of methodical heaviness. It’s so clever, and so damn appealing, ending things on a delightfully depressing high.

Once again, Ghorot impresses. Taking familiar genres and blending them together with precision and thoughtfulness. Yes, it is extreme, but it’s extreme with wide ranging appeal because there is so much going on. It’s well worth a listen.
