Live Review: Beyond Extinction with Mastiff and Tribe of Ghosts at The Black Heart, London (07/03/26)
Have you recovered yet? I’ve just about got there, although the big bruise on my lower back from being slammed into resulting in me crashing into the shelf that runs around the wall of the Black Heart says otherwise. That hurt, but such is life in the pit and when bands as heavy as this are in town, you got to expect a certain amount of blood, sweat, and tears.
Was fun though, right?
I thought so, even if some of the night is a bit of blur, caused by the combination of limited sleep and some delightful rum and cokes. The next day (and the day after) wasn’t pretty for me, but considering the celebratory nature of the night, I’ve forgiven myself for going a little too hard. After all, it’s not often that you get a bill featuring Tribe of Ghosts, Mastiff, and Beyond Extinction, with the latter headlining and performing their debut full-length album, Where They Gather in full.
I’m presuming you’ve heard the album, and if you haven’t, why the hell not?
Delivering vast intensity and nihilistic heaviness through the medium of raw and rough death metal. Which is given even more weight thanks to story-telling that is painfully real and technical flair that adds a sharpness to things, be it razor like or serrated. Be warned, you’re going to come away having felt chewed up and spat out.

That’s a snippet of what I wrote in my review for the album (read the full thing here) and those words ring just as true months later. In fact, I’d go as far to say that my words lack the potency needed to compare the recording to the live show. I can tell you that it was heavy, brutal, and downright ugly to the ears, but the emotion? The feeling of accomplishment? The rabid response from a hungry crowd, and how tight Beyond Extinction delivered so much of it? You had to be there.

You had to be there though for other reasons too and one of which came via the incredible amorphous entity that is Tribe of Ghosts. Getting better and better each time I see them, partially because their musical palette continues to evolve, partially because they have developed their live show to a professional level, and partially because they continue to find new, exciting, and emotional ways to connect to an audience.
You watch Tribe of Ghosts, and, at times, you may actually wonder if they even enjoy it, such is the intensity on show. I mean, of course they do and you only have to speak to them at any stage of the night to understand that, but the level they perform at must be so exhausting, both physically and mentally. Yet, on a night like this, there is electricity in the air and it doesn’t just energise the band, it bounces off them and into the crowd. Being part of a pit that is induced off the back of immense tracks like Corroded Gold, False Gods, Hive, and Forever Falling Upwards left me feeling like the soles of my shoes were melting and if I reached out to touch another person, I would have shocked them.
I really do think they’re so special, and each time I see them live, I become even more convinced. Tribe of Ghosts 2026 is more expressive than ever, and that feeling is undeniable.
Mastiff are one of the UK’s best and brightest heavy bands, and no matter how many times I see them play, I’ll never get bored of being smashed over the head by their angry and intense belligerence delivered with vibrant character. Especially as their back catalogue really allows them to draw from an array of tracks, with several from the new EP, ‘For All the Dead Dreams’ sounding so strong here. A Story Behind Every Light is downright unforgettable and I love that over the years, I’ve got to hear and see this band grow. Come for the punishing sludgy hardcore-infused hellishness, stay for strength of feeling and expansive musical layers that make them so much more than just a ‘heavy’ band.

Which brings me back around to Beyond Extinction who, hopefully, left the venue feeling so proud of what they did at this show. Not only delivering a powerful and explosive rendition of a huge album, but delivering an immersive experience too that made us all feel like we’re were in some kind of hellscape. Watch Them Gather has many, many great tracks and it shows off Beyond Extinction at their best but there’s some extra fire in their bellies here. This clearly meant a lot to them, and a packed Black Heart (hopefully) made them feel like it mattered, because it did.
It was one hell of a night.
