EP Review: HANABIE. – HOT TOPIC (Sony Music)

Japanese metal force HANABIE. will release a new EP titled ‘HOT TOPIC’ on 28th January via Sony Music.

Dismiss HANABIE. at your peril, the Tokyo-based “Harajuku-Core” band is on fire, and this five-track EP is another strong entry in their catalogue. Although considering it has several previously released singles on it, that’s no surprise. Love them or loathe them, HANABIE.’s rise is undeniable, and the pairing of ICONIC and Spicy Queen exemplifies why. Both filled with garish effects, poppy to the point of being sickening, and absurdly heavy, breakdowns included. Brilliant nonsense that gets well and truly jammed in the brain.

Though that is a fair summation of the EP as whole. Brilliant and addictive nonsense that is neither one thing nor the other. It’s simply HANABIE. andトキメキAbout you, GIRL’S TALK and はなびえんちゃん。のテーマ are varied, weird, and very excitable.

If you’re a fan already, then you won’t exactly need convincing of this band’s unique qualities, but you will be glad to have a few more bangers to enjoy. If you’re not a fan, you might enjoy the infectious nature of the first two tracks, but I don’t think that, overall, any minds will be changed.
