Album Review: Sanguisugabogg – Hideous Aftermath (Century Media)
Sanguisugabogg, the Ohio, USA, death metal band will release their brand-new album, ‘Hideous Aftermath’ on October 10th via Century Media Records.

The band with the unpronounceable name returns with a lust for blood, a thirst for violence, and the aptitude to deliver a cacophony of death metal ferocity with conviction. It is Hideous Aftermath, and it is a showcase of glorious, gory, and garish death metal.
There’s an intensity present from the start that grabs the attention, one that has a venomous edge, but comes with a certain amount of exciting groove. It’s not going to be too much of a surprise for anyone to learn that you can go wild to this record, but it might be something of surprise to learn that you can really bang your head to some of the rhythms. It’s all part of the evolving nature of this band, varying up the savagery and adding touches of appealing aspects, albeit without compromising on heaviness.
The most experimental Sanguisugabogg album to date? I think so, even if the sum of all its parts is death metal through and through.
So, what can you expect from Hideous Aftermath should you press play? Twelve (which includes an extended version of a track that already appears on the album) malevolent and frenzied examples of modern death metal that has a thick and viscous feel. Where a combination of riffs; sometimes razor sharp, sometimes blunt, sometimes serrated; slice, hack, and tear through flesh. Where weighty percussion cracks bones, smashes muscle and tenderises the soul. Where deep and guttural vocals make the eyes, ears, and other such holes, bleed. It’s horrific, but if you like your metal on the extreme side of things, you’re going to come away very pleased.
Sanguisugabogg have refined what they do, upping their production game so the rawness of their sound is less severe on the ears and less hostile on the mind. It’s less about making as much noise as possible and more about making the noise as impactful as possible. After all, you don’t find death metal that passes the five-minute mark much, let alone the seven minute mark. I shit you not, there’s a track called Paid in Flesh that is a few seconds short of eight minutes.
It’s insane, wholly unique, experimental, and kind of brilliant too. Trust me, you won’t notice the run time.
Trust Sanguisugabogg too, as they have delivered a beast of a record here. Sure, it will slam your face into a wall over and over again, but it does so with love. They’ve not sounded this feral and focused to date, but they’ve also not sounded this expressive either. The strength of feeling in this record is such a difference maker, and even though the disturbing tone of the music might be the most prevalent thing about it, it’s not what stays with you afterwards.
Viciousness with a bit more heart and soul.
