EP Review: De Profundis – The Gospel of Rot (Self Released)
Celebrating 20 years of death dealing and devastation, De Profundis have returned with a rejuvenated line-up and a brand-new EP called ‘The Gospel of Rot’. It will be released on October 1st, 2025.

Four tracks of dark and overwhelming death metal in classic De Profundis style, which means you’ll feel it in the pit of your soul. Fast and furious from the start, the group roll back the years and deliver a cacophony of head-banging inducing noise with I: Corruption. It’s old-school death metal, but with touches of blackened thrash, and showcases the new parts of De Profundis nicely. Namely, new vocalist Stefano Bassi and bassist Simon McAuliffe, both of whom make an impact here, and across the entire EP.
II: Deception is next, delivering a forceful and robust blast of heaviness that moves with groovy intensity, even if it’s more chaotic than anything else. The guitar work on this track is stellar, even more evident by an impressive solo. Whereas the vocals and drums of III: Indoctrination are what stand out as the band vary the tempos. Before this top-form EP wraps up with a cover of the Sepultura classic, Subtraction. A very strong cover that delivers on the raw intensity of the original, while also sounding suitably De Profundis, and by that, I mean heavy and furious.
It’s good to have them back.
