EP Review: Zombie Apocalypse – Life Without Pain Is A Fucking Fantasy (Innerstrength Records)

Zombie Apocalypse was formed in 2000 by Matt Fox and Matthew Fletcher (Shai Hulud) and Ronen Kauffman (try.fail.try), with Eric Dellon (Shallow Water Grave) joining soon after.

Releasing two EPs in 2003 and 2005, it’s been nearly 15 years since the world has heard anything new from these purveyors of break-neck Crossover/Thrash.

Rich with the distinctive imagery ZA’s fans have come to expect, the band’s new ten-song EP — Life Without Pain is a Fucking Fantasy — catapults Zombie Apocalypse into the present with their most focused effort to date.

It will be released on August 9th 2019 via Innerstrength Records.

It’s been a while since Zombie Apocalypse have been in the game and metal has moved on a fair bit since their last release. With that in mind, you have to wonder just how Zombie Apocalypse will fit in the modern metal world of ‘anything goes’.

After hearing Life Without Pain is a Fucking Fantasy, it turns out they will fit in very nicely. Simply because they embody the ‘anything goes’ mantra.

A band who, for simplicity sake, play thrash metal but do so much with it that it will take many, many listens to fully understand and appreciate what we’re hearing.

Confusion aside, Life Without Pain is a Fucking Fantasy is bloody great. It does not mess around in the slightest as the first couple of songs come out snarling and with a mouth full of teeth. Listen though, hear those riffs? Hear that hardcore style groove? Hear that unexpected rhythmic hook? Yes, this is Zombie Apocalypse, a band who we can be very thankful for their return.

Seriously, how damn good are You’ve Got Jail, Brave Digger and Holy Fuck, We’re Alive? Catchy, exciting and so varied it beggars belief. This is an EP you need to hear, you will not regret it.
