EP Review: Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight – Stakes n Scale (Superhot Records)
Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight announce the immediate release of Stakes n Scale, a two-song acoustic EP.
Ex-drummer Chris West and occasional acoustic guitar collaborator joins Pete Holland for an acoustic rendition of Up the Stakes and a cover of Scale the Mountain by Stubb. Stripped back to the bone, Up the Stakes is taken from the band’s 2012 full length Going Home while Scale the Mountain first appeared on Stubb’s self-titled debut album with both Holland and West being members of the band when that song was written.
West commented:
“The idea to do these versions came about a few years ago. I always thought Stakes would work without all the distortion so I spent an evening a few years back working it out with my acoustic and a couple of whiskies. Pete turned up after midnight and a good night out and we recorded a neighbour-friendly very hushed, rather slurry version which I still have on my phone. It’s worth keeping that in mind and digging into the lyrics as well. A recent trip into the Trippy archives got me thinking about all the songs that never got a release, so following on from last year’s Lost Songs I decided now was the time. Pairing it with Scale the Mountain made sense because of our shared history with Stubb.”
There’s not a whole lot to say about the two tracks that make up Stakes n Scales. Having no familiarity with the non-acoustic versions, there is no comparisons for me to make. That can be a good thing though as there is nothing to cloud my judgement. Instead getting to enjoy two morose and mellow acoustic tracks.
Up the Stakes vampire themed lyrics and country/western style melody is by far the more appealing. It’s a track that could fit nicely as part of the soundtrack of the likes of the cult classic vampire movie, Near Dark or John Carpenter’s Vampires.
Not to suggest that Scale the Mountain is any kind of slouch. Here the guitar melody and vocals take on much lighter and more airy style. Whereas Up the Stakes bears down on you with weight, this one makes you feel like you’re floating.
Both solid and interesting acoustic numbers that leave an impression.
